“Griffin VanMeter on Using Writing as a Creative Process” Town Branch p. 118 https://vimeo.com/104015855 GRIFFIN VANMETER: I think writing is so important because it’s always the genesis of where an idea actually, from an idea in your head, or something you see actually transforms into an actual project, and a lot of times we’ll have, a lot of times we’ll have people come to us and say, “Well I have this idea, and we want you to do something with it,” and our response is always “Write it down, um, and can you express this idea on one sheet of paper, uh, that can explain it.” And a lot of times, they, they haven’t done that, um, and we always, in all of our businesses, we encourage that as, as the starting point because you start to, through that writing process you really start to understand what’s legitimate and what, what this idea will, will take to, to uh to prosper. Um, so yea, and if you can, if you can write something down, and it’s the same as when I, so I was an art student at UK, and the woodshop guy when we were taking sculpture, he, we’d say, “Oh we have this idea, I want to build this,” and he would say, “Do you have a plan for it, and can you, can you draw it.” And it’s essentially, it’s the same idea, and if you couldn’t draw it, then he’d be like, “Well we can’t do it. You need to draw this first.” Um, and, writing, writing’s that same, same process. It starts to give you a blueprint, uh, for wherever it, it will head, take you, whatever the idea is or whatever the project is, it all starts with blocking and tackling and writing it out.
